Born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Daniel emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa in 1982. He started playing the recorder when he was 6 in Somerset West and when he moved to Oranjemund in Namibia began learning the clarinet and piano. 

When he went to High School at SACS he took music as a matric subject under the tuition of Andrea Rutter and also began playing the saxophone in the high school jazz band. At school he played in the SACS Concert, Jazz and Marching Bands and was the SACS Jazz Band leader in his matric year, 1998. Whilst in the SACS Bands, he had the opportunity to perform at Parliament for Nelson Mandela and many gigs at places such as the V&A Waterfront and lead the University of Cape Town's rag procession with the SACS Marching Band annually. He gained his matric piano, Trinity Grade 8 clarinet and also won the prestigious Walter Swanson Music Bursary Competition in his matric year. Whilst at high school, Dan also gained experience by performing with his father's rock band, Bedrock, around southern Namibia.

Daniel then began reading a Bachelor of Music (classical) degree at the University of Cape Town (U.C.T.) in 1999, under the tuition of Jim Reinders, before changing course to the Jazz Performance stream in 2000 learning with Shannon Mowday and Doctor Mike Rossi. 

Whilst at U.C.T. Daniel performed with the U.C.T. Wind Band (conducted by Shaun Kierman), and was the lead alto saxophonist in the U.C.T. Big Band (conducted by Doctor Mike Campbell). He also performed in shows such as 'Isinqwe - The Spirit of Jazz' at the Baxter Theatre. Daniel also had an opportunity to back jazz 'greats' in the U.C.T. Big Band, such as South African legend, Winston Mankunku and American musicians Ron McCurdy and multi-instrumentalist, Bill Prince.

Daniel was also the lead alto saxophonist of the Standard Bank South African National Youth Big Band in 2001 (conducted by Doctor Mike Campbell) and 2002 (conducted by Kevin Davidson) and also made it into the prestigious Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Octet in 2003 (lead by Darius Brubeck), comprising of South Africa's top young jazz musicians under the age 0f 27.

Daniel is also a member of South African group, Golliwog, who have performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town (2002), OPPI KOPPI 'Plunge' (Pretoria) and 'Willie Smit Easter' Festivals (Northam), 'Splashy Fen' Music Festival (Underberg), 'Flux' Festival (Mooi River), 'Tuks' Festival (Pretoria), 'Wingerdstok' Festival (Thee Waterskloof) and 'Up the Creek' (Swellendam), the 'M.F.M. Festival' (Stellenbosch), the Cape Town 'African Summer Stage' Festivals and 'Obz' Festival (Observatory, Cape Town). Golliwog have also performed at many clubs and functions such as 'Tings 'n Times' and 'Cool Runnings" (Pretoria), CARFAX (Johannesburg) and 'The Jam', 'Mercury Live and Lounge' in Cape Town amongst many others. Golliwog have released two songs on the SL Magazine compilation CD's (No.4 - 'Nasty' and No. 10 - 'Mattress Mambo') and also have a track, 'Nasty' on the 'A Moment in Cape Town' album, recorded at the Wonder Sessions at Beach Road Studios, SABC (WGM 01).

Daniel also lead his own jazz quintet, '5 of a Kind', who also performed extensively in South Africa and Namibia performing for functions, weddings, restaurants and parties. '5 of a Kind' also performed with Pieter Dirk-Uys (Tannie Evita) in Darling for South African cartoonist, Zapiro's latest book launch in 2001 and at festivals such as the 'Oude Libertas Twilight Concert Series', in Stellenbosch.

Dan now leads his own jazz quartet, the Dan Shout Quartet, (D.S.Q), who pe3form regularly around Cape Town. He also performs with a Latin and Funk tentet, lead by a guitarist, arranger, composer and lecturer at U.C.T., Darryl Andrews called DA BAND, who regularly perform at jazz venues and restaurants in Cape Town.

Daniel has also performed in many Big Bands and orchestras such as Cape Town Jazz Orchestra and Mike Campbell Big Band (both conducted by Doctor Mike Campbell), the V.J.R. Big Band (conducted by Richard and Ian Smith), the SPIER West-Side Story Orchestra (conducted by Charles Hazlewood - Wilton's Music Hall, London) and the Premier of the Duke Ellington Sacred Concerts (conducted by Doctor Mike Rossi).

Daniel is versatile and also regularly jams saxophone to house music along with South Africa's top DJ's such as Dean Fuel, Ryan Dent, Shayne Manne, Roger Goode, Craig de Sousa, Shaun Bower, Jody K, Rudi, Tony Smith, Peter Abrahams and CARPARK! in clubs such as 'The Fez' and 'Sutra' to name a few. 

Besides performing in jazz formats and house music, Daniel has also performed and toured around South Africa with theatrical tribute shows such as Mike McCullagh's '60 Something' and 'Milestones to the Millennium', playing rock saxophone.

Daniel also hosted a jazz radio show on Fine Music Radio (101.3fm), a Cape Town community radio station in 2002 and some of 2003.

Dan has also performed and jammed with many South African bands such as 'The Blues Broers', "Breakfast Included', 'Tuxedo' and 'The Afro-Cuban All Star Band' to name a few. He has also done a few recording sessions for music on adverts and samples.

Besides performing, Daniel presently teaches at SACS High School in Newlands, Cape Town.
